Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax has died in what authorities described as an apparent murder-suicide involving his wife, according to local law enforcement officials.
Police said officers responded to a residence following reports of a domestic incident, where they discovered Fairfax and his wife deceased. Investigators said preliminary findings indicate Fairfax fatally shot his spouse before taking his own life. Authorities added that the case remains under active investigation and final determinations will follow the completion of medical examiner reports.
Fairfax, a Democrat, served as Virginia’s lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022 and was once considered a rising political figure in state politics. During his time in office, he presided over the Virginia Senate and was involved in a number of legislative initiatives related to economic development and education policy.
His political career later faced challenges after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced in 2019. Fairfax denied those allegations at the time, but the controversy significantly affected his standing within state politics and shaped the trajectory of his public career.
Officials have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the deaths, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. Authorities also asked the public to respect the privacy of the family during this time.
The incident has drawn national attention given Fairfax’s previous role in Virginia’s government and his visibility in Democratic Party leadership circles during his term as lieutenant governor.
Law enforcement agencies emphasized that domestic-violence situations can escalate quickly and encouraged individuals experiencing conflict or distress to seek support through crisis resources and community services.
Investigators said additional information may be released as the inquiry continues.
