Authorities in Australia have launched an investigation after actor Ruby Rose publicly accused pop star Katy Perry of sexually assaulting her during an incident that allegedly took place at a Melbourne nightclub more than a decade ago.
Victoria Police confirmed they are examining a historical sexual assault allegation linked to an incident in Melbourne in 2010, following Rose’s complaint. The investigation is being handled by the force’s Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team.
Rose first made the allegation in a series of social-media posts, claiming the incident occurred while the two were at the Spice Market nightclub in Melbourne when she was in her early 20s. She later said she had formally approached police to explore whether the case could be investigated despite the passage of time.
In response, representatives for Perry strongly denied the accusation, describing the claims as “categorically false” and “dangerous, reckless lies.”
Police have not confirmed whether any charges have been filed and said the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities typically avoid identifying individuals involved in historical sexual-assault probes during early stages of inquiries.
The allegation has drawn widespread public attention due to the high-profile nature of both figures and the length of time between the alleged incident and the complaint. Rose said speaking publicly about the experience nearly two decades later was difficult but necessary for her personal healing.
Legal experts note that historical sexual-assault cases can present challenges for investigators because evidence and witness availability may be limited over time. Still, authorities emphasized that all allegations are taken seriously and assessed according to standard procedures.
The outcome of the investigation will depend on whether sufficient evidence emerges to support further legal action as the inquiry continues.
