Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said European leaders appear uncertain and “lost” in their efforts to persuade Donald Trump to shift his stance on key international issues, following recent high-level meetings with the US president.
Speaking after discussions involving US and European officials, Zelensky suggested that Europe is facing growing difficulty in shaping Washington’s approach to global security, particularly on matters related to Ukraine and the ongoing war with Russia. His remarks highlight widening concerns in European capitals about how to maintain influence in transatlantic decision-making.
Zelensky said the meetings showed a clear imbalance, with European leaders attempting to convince Trump to adjust his views, but failing to present a united or effective strategy. According to him, the lack of cohesion weakens Europe’s voice at a critical moment for regional and global security.
The Ukrainian leader has repeatedly stressed that strong and consistent Western support is essential for Ukraine’s defense. While acknowledging continued backing from European nations, he warned that uncertainty in US policy could have serious consequences not only for Ukraine but for broader stability across Europe.
Trump, who has taken a more transactional approach to foreign policy, has questioned long-term military commitments abroad and has urged US allies to shoulder more responsibility for their own security. His stance has raised concerns among European leaders, many of whom fear a reduced American role could leave the continent more vulnerable.
Zelensky’s comments come amid renewed debate within the European Union over defense autonomy and the need for stronger coordination among member states. Several European officials have recently called for increased defense spending and deeper military cooperation to reduce dependence on Washington.
As diplomatic efforts continue, Zelensky warned that hesitation and division among allies only benefit aggressors. He urged Europe to act with clarity and unity, saying decisive leadership is needed to ensure long-term security and prevent further escalation of conflict.
