Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has cautioned that Europe remains heavily reliant on the United States for its security and must take decisive steps to develop its own independent military capabilities.
Speaking during talks with European leaders, Zelensky said the war in Ukraine has exposed serious weaknesses in Europe’s defense structure, highlighting the need for a stronger and more unified continental force. While acknowledging the crucial role played by US military and political support, he stressed that Europe cannot depend indefinitely on Washington for its long-term security.
“Europe needs the strength to defend itself,” Zelensky said, urging European nations to invest more in defense, coordinate military planning, and strengthen joint arms production. He argued that a self-reliant European defense system would not only enhance regional security but also act as a strong deterrent against future aggression.
Zelensky praised the backing Ukraine has received from European countries and the European Union, saying it has been vital to resisting Russia’s invasion. However, he noted that the conflict should serve as a wake-up call for Europe to rethink its broader security strategy.
His comments come as debates intensify across Europe over defense autonomy and rising concerns about global instability and shifting geopolitical priorities. Zelensky warned that delay and disunity could leave Europe vulnerable, adding that decisive action now would help secure lasting peace and stability across the continent.
