A 26-year-old chemistry teacher in New Jersey has been charged with sexual assault after a student alleged they engaged in a sexual relationship at his apartment, prosecutors said.
Jason Howe, a teacher and sports coach at Sterling High School, was arrested Friday following a report from a female student who told authorities she had been involved with a teacher.
According to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, investigators determined that Howe and the student had sexual intercourse at his apartment in Runnemede last month. The student is believed to be between 16 and 18 years old.
Although the age of consent in New Jersey is 16, state law prohibits sexual relationships between teachers and their students.
Howe, who coached cross country, girls’ track, and boys’ basketball in addition to teaching chemistry, faces charges of sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
The case has shocked the school community, where students described Howe as a popular and engaging teacher. “I would have never expected him to do this,” one student told local media.
School officials said they were “blindsided” by the allegations and are cooperating fully with law enforcement. Howe has been barred from school property pending further legal proceedings.
Prosecutors said the identified student is currently the only known victim but encouraged others to come forward if additional incidents are reported.
Howe is scheduled to appear in court next week as the investigation continues.
