Uncertainty is reshaping the narrative around Patrick Mahomes heading into the 2026 season, with the Kansas City Chiefs star falling out of the Top 15 quarterback rankings in early fantasy football projections amid concerns over a serious knee injury.
Mahomes is recovering from a multi-ligament knee injury that required surgery, a setback that has cast doubt on both his availability for Week 1 and his effectiveness when he returns. While the former Super Bowl MVP has said he is hopeful of being ready for the season opener, analysts say the rehab process and long-term impact of the injury make him one of the league’s biggest question marks entering next year.
Those concerns were reflected in a “way too early” 2026 quarterback rankings released by Fantasy Life analyst Kendall Valenzuela. In a surprise to many fans, Mahomes did not appear in the Top 15 at all, a dramatic drop for a player long considered the safest elite option at the position.
The list was topped by Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills, followed by Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens and Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals. Younger quarterbacks such as Jayden Daniels and Caleb Williams also ranked ahead of Mahomes, highlighting how much injury uncertainty is weighing on his outlook.
The omission is striking given Mahomes’ recent production. In 2025, he ranked fourth among quarterbacks in fantasy points per game under standard NFL scoring, trailing only Allen, Matthew Stafford and Drake Maye. A key part of that output came from his mobility, as Mahomes rushed for 422 yards and five touchdowns, an element of his game that could be affected by the knee injury.
Fantasy analysts note that the ranking is less a judgment on Mahomes’ talent and more a reflection of risk. Multi ligament knee injuries can alter a quarterback’s movement and durability, and even a successful recovery does not guarantee the same level of play immediately.
There are also broader questions about Kansas City’s offense heading into 2026, including potential changes to the supporting cast around Mahomes. While the Chiefs could add new weapons to offset any physical limitations, early projections are clearly taking a cautious approach.
Mahomes was ranked 13th and 14th in fantasy quarterback rankings in the two seasons prior to 2025, so a lower standing would not be unprecedented. Still, falling completely outside the Top 15 underscores how unusual this moment is for one of the NFL’s defining players.
If Mahomes returns fully healthy, many believe the drop will prove temporary. But for now, as he works his way back from injury, even one of football’s biggest stars is facing a rare season of doubt heading into 2026.
