LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Kansas Jayhawks showed their full potential Tuesday night, dominating a previously unbeaten No. 2 Iowa State squad in a convincing 84–63 victory at Allen Fieldhouse. The win snapped Iowa State’s perfect start to the season and marked a major turning point for Kansas as it continues Big 12 play.
Kansas took control early and never looked back. The Jayhawks jumped out to a commanding lead, fueled by a barrage of outside shooting and tenacious defense that kept the Cyclones off balance throughout the night. By halftime, Kansas had built a large cushion and maintained consistent pressure after the break.
Senior guard Tre White led all scorers with 19 points, sinking multiple three-pointers that energized the home crowd and helped Kansas seize momentum in the opening minutes. Freshman standout Darryn Peterson also made a notable impact, contributing 16 points despite battling cramps late in the game.
Kansas’ balanced offense extended beyond its top two scorers. Melvin Council Jr. added 15 points, while Flory Bidunga chipped in 10, further demonstrating Kansas’ depth and versatility on the offensive end. The Jayhawks also moved the ball efficiently, creating scoring opportunities and keeping Iowa State’s defense on its heels.
For much of the game, Iowa State struggled to find offensive rhythm. The Cyclones shot below their season averages, and turnovers early in the contest hindered their ability to stay competitive. Although Iowa State made a brief push in the second half, Kansas responded with key runs that quickly restored a double-digit lead.
The loss ended Iowa State’s 16–0 start and snapped one of the most impressive winning streaks in college basketball this season. Prior to Tuesday, Iowa State had appeared among the top teams in the nation, including a decisive road victory over a No. 1–ranked opponent earlier in the season.
“I thought our guys played with great urgency,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said after the game. “We knew what we were facing and came out ready to compete at a high level. Our execution on both ends of the floor was strong, and that was key.”
With the win, Kansas improves its record and gains confidence as it navigates the demanding Big 12 schedule. Meanwhile, Iowa State will look to regroup after its first loss, focusing on areas for improvement as the season progresses.
