A U.S. Secret Service agent assigned to protect Jill Biden accidentally shot himself in the leg at Philadelphia International Airport on Friday morning, according to officials.
Authorities said the injury occurred shortly before 9 a.m. when the agent’s firearm discharged unintentionally while he was traveling in an unmarked vehicle as part of the protective detail. The incident was described as a “negligent discharge,” a term commonly used by law enforcement when a weapon fires unintentionally.
Officials confirmed that Jill Biden was not present at the scene at the time of the incident and was not in danger. Other law enforcement personnel quickly responded and transported the injured agent to a nearby hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
Airport operations were not affected by the shooting, and authorities said there was no threat to the public during or after the incident.
The U.S. Secret Service has strict firearm safety protocols for agents assigned to protective details, and incidents involving accidental discharges are typically reviewed internally to determine whether additional training or procedural changes are necessary.
The agency has not released further details about the circumstances leading to the discharge but said the matter is under review. Protective teams assigned to high-profile public figures regularly operate in busy transportation hubs, where security procedures are closely coordinated with local law enforcement agencies.
Officials emphasized that the event appears to have been isolated and accidental, with no broader security implications related to the protective mission.
