The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has launched an investigation into a sexual assault allegation against Representative Eric Swalwell, adding a significant legal dimension to a controversy already reshaping California’s closely watched governor’s race.
According to officials familiar with the case, the probe follows allegations by a former congressional staffer who claims Swalwell assaulted her during two separate incidents, including one in New York in 2024 after a charity event. The woman alleged she was too intoxicated to consent during the encounter and attempted to resist. The Special Victims Division has encouraged anyone with additional information to come forward as the investigation proceeds.
The investigation comes amid broader claims by several women accusing the California Democrat of misconduct, including allegations of unwanted physical contact and explicit messages. The accusations surfaced in recent reporting by major media outlets and triggered political fallout within the Democratic Party.
Swalwell has strongly denied all allegations, calling them “false” and politically motivated. In public statements, he said he intends to defend himself and cooperate with any investigation while continuing his campaign for governor.
The Manhattan DA’s involvement marks the first known criminal inquiry connected to the claims and could have major implications for Swalwell’s political future as early voting approaches in California’s gubernatorial primary.
The allegations have already prompted several Democratic leaders and organizations to withdraw endorsements and call on Swalwell to suspend his campaign while investigations continue. Campaign staff departures and mounting pressure from party officials have further intensified scrutiny surrounding the race.
Authorities have not announced any charges, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Legal analysts say the outcome of the probe could play a decisive role in determining both the trajectory of the governor’s race and Swalwell’s standing within national Democratic politics.
