Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is sharpening her attacks on Vice President JD Vance, fueling speculation that the New York Democrat may be positioning herself for a 2028 presidential run.
Over the past week, Ocasio-Cortez has drawn a stark and deeply personal contrast between her vision for America and that of Vance, particularly following a fatal Minneapolis shooting involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent. She condemned Vance’s defense of the agent’s actions, framing the issue as a fundamental moral divide.
“I understand that Vice President Vance believes that shooting a young mother of three in the face three times is an acceptable America that he wants to live in, and I do not,” Ocasio-Cortez told reporters earlier this month. “I do not believe that the American people should be assassinated in the street.”
The remarks marked one of her most direct and forceful rebukes of Vance to date and underscored what Democratic strategists see as a deliberate effort to define him early as her ideological opposite.
Ocasio-Cortez, widely known as AOC, has not yet announced her political plans for 2028. Sources say she is weighing whether to challenge Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in a New York primary or pursue a national bid for the White House. However, her rhetoric and recent moves increasingly resemble those of a presidential contender.
She has begun weighing in on a wide range of national and international issues, from Venezuela to health care subsidies, signaling ambitions that extend beyond her House district.
“The mini primary for 2028 has already begun and she’s in it,” said Democratic strategist Hyma Moore. “She knows she has a real chance, so she doesn’t want to be caught unprepared.”
Her criticism of Vance has become a central feature of that strategy. Earlier this week, she escalated her attacks after Vance suggested the woman killed in Minneapolis was a victim of her own ideology. Ocasio-Cortez dismissed the argument as revealing more about Vance’s worldview than the incident itself.
She has also leaned into polling that shows her narrowly defeating Vance in a hypothetical 2028 matchup. After resharing a poll showing her winning 51 percent to 49 percent, she added a playful “Bloop!” on social media. Asked about it later, she laughed and said, “Let the record show, I would stomp him.”
Republicans widely view Vance as the early frontrunner for the GOP nomination in 2028, though some insiders believe Secretary of State Marco Rubio could emerge as an alternative. President Trump has previously indicated he would likely endorse Vance.
Democratic strategists say Ocasio-Cortez’s approach reflects a calculated move to take on the MAGA movement’s most visible heir.
“He’s the early GOP frontrunner and no one else has formed a clear anti-Vance message,” Moore said. “She’s showing she can handle high-stakes politics.”
Others note that Ocasio-Cortez is not simply opposing Vance, but offering a competing vision of the country, something they believe foreshadows a potential 2028 showdown.
If she runs, Ocasio-Cortez would likely carry the progressive mantle once held by Sen. Bernie Sanders, who drew massive crowds during his presidential campaigns and has appeared alongside her at rallies across the country.
Her biggest potential Democratic rival remains California Gov. Gavin Newsom, whom many in the party view as the current frontrunner. Still, some Democrats argue Ocasio-Cortez is the only other figure with comparable name recognition, fundraising appeal and crowd-drawing power.
“She is the only Democrat right now who clearly has a path out of the primary,” one strategist said.
Questions remain, including concerns among some Democrats about nominating another woman after recent presidential losses. But allies argue that openings do not wait for perfect timing.
As one strategist put it, Ocasio-Cortez is already laying the groundwork.
“She’s being very smart about positioning herself,” Moore said. “The seeds are clearly being planted.”
