A travel website’s reliance on artificial intelligence has led to an embarrassing tourism blunder after visitors were misdirected to non-existent hot springs in Tasmania, highlighting growing concerns over unchecked AI-generated content.
The error centered on Weldborough, a small town in north-east Tasmania, after an online travel article promoted so-called “Weldborough Hot Springs” as a tranquil wellness retreat surrounded by lush forests. Complete with vivid descriptions and eye-catching images, the listing encouraged travelers to explore what it claimed were natural geothermal pools offering relaxation and therapeutic benefits.
In reality, no such hot springs exist.
Local businesses and residents were left puzzled as tourists began arriving in the area asking for directions to the imaginary attraction. The owner of the Weldborough Hotel said multiple visitors stopped by seeking guidance, only to be told that the nearest waterway is the icy Weld River, known more for its cold temperatures than any spa-like qualities.
The travel company responsible later acknowledged that the content had been generated using an AI tool and published without adequate human verification. The company said the material was uploaded while staff were unavailable, allowing the inaccurate information to remain live long enough to mislead travelers.
Tourism experts say the incident is a textbook example of “AI hallucination,” a phenomenon in which generative systems fabricate realistic-sounding but false information. While AI is increasingly used across the travel industry to create destination guides and marketing material, specialists warn that over-reliance on automation without fact-checking can damage credibility and frustrate consumers.
The company has since removed the misleading content and pledged to strengthen its editorial review process. Meanwhile, the episode serves as a cautionary tale for both travel providers and tourists, underscoring the importance of verifying destinations through multiple trusted sources before setting out.
