Catherine O’Hara, the beloved actress known for iconic roles in Schitt’s Creek, Home Alone, and Beetlejuice, died on January 30, 2026, at the age of 71, her representatives confirmed.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical emergency at O’Hara’s Brentwood home in the early morning hours after a 911 caller reported she was having trouble breathing, according to authorities and dispatch audio reviewed by People and other outlets. Paramedics transported her to a nearby hospital in serious condition, where she was later pronounced dead.

No official cause of death has been released, though multiple reports describe her passing following a brief illness.

A Career of Range, Humor and Heart

Born in Toronto in 1954, O’Hara built a remarkable career spanning five decades and multiple genres. She first gained acclaim with the Canadian comedy troupe Second City Television (SCTV) before moving into film and TV roles that endeared her to global audiences.

She became a household name as the frantic but loving mother Kate McCallister in the Home Alone films, with her frantic cry of “Kevin!” becoming one of the most memorable moments in holiday movie history.

Her portrayal of the eccentric Moira Rose on the acclaimed sitcom Schitt’s Creek earned her an Emmy Award and cemented her status as a comedy legend.

O’Hara also appeared in beloved films including Beetlejuice and Christopher Guest’s mockumentaries such as Best in Show, showcasing her rare ability to blend physical comedy with nuanced emotional performances.

    Final Projects and Public Appearances

O’Hara remained active in her later years, earning accolades and nominations for roles in Apple TV+’s The Studio and HBO’s The Last of Us. She attended the 2025 Emmys, where she received nominations for both projects and stood on stage with fellow performers.

Her death came just months after that public appearance, underscoring how quickly her health declined.

    Tributes Pour In

Tributes have poured in from co-stars and fans around the world. Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin shared an emotional Instagram message, reflecting on their decades-long connection.

Colleagues from across Hollywood, including Pedro Pascal and others who worked with her on recent projects, praised her warmth, wit and lasting influence on comedy and television.

    Legacy of Laughter and Heart

O’Hara is survived by her husband, Bo Welch, and their two sons, Matthew and Luke. Her ability to deliver unforgettable comedic performances while imbuing characters with depth and humanity made her one of the most beloved performers of her generation.

Her work will continue to inspire future generations of actors and audiences alike.
