The National Weather Service has issued a freeze watch for much of Central Florida ahead of what could be the coldest temperatures the region has experienced in years.
A freeze watch means temperatures could drop to 32 degrees or lower early Friday morning. Forecasters warn that some areas may remain below freezing for four to six hours, increasing the risk of damage to plants, pipes, and pets.
Marion, Sumter, and northern Lake counties are expected to see the coldest conditions, with exterior pipes needing protection. Residents are advised to cover sensitive plants or bring them indoors by Thursday evening and to ensure pets are kept inside.
Counties included in the freeze watch are Marion, Sumter, Lake, Orange, Flagler, Osceola, Brevard, Volusia, Seminole, and Polk.
The cold weather will be driven by a strong Arctic front arriving Thursday morning. Temperatures are expected to peak early in the day in the upper 50s to lower 60s before steadily falling through the afternoon.
By Friday morning, temperatures across Central Florida could drop into the 20s and 30s, excluding wind chill values.
Forecasters also warn that parts of the region could dip below freezing Saturday morning again. Another reinforcing surge of cold air is expected Sunday, potentially bringing sub-freezing temperatures back to parts of Central Florida by Monday morning.
