An 18-year-old Florida man was taken into custody after deputies found him inside a Walmart store late Tuesday night, where he had hoped to spend the night as part of a TikTok challenge.
Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded shortly after 11 p.m. to a burglary call at the Walmart on McCall Road in Englewood. A 911 caller reported seeing a man still inside the store after closing time and broadcasting live on TikTok.
When officers entered, they located the suspect, identified as Isaac Hurley, in the dog bed aisle. Investigators say Hurley had entered the store around 10:15 p.m. with plans to stay overnight to complete the social-media challenge and earn views.
During the incident, deputies say Hurley removed an iPhone charger from its packaging, leading to an additional petit theft allegation. He was arrested on charges of burglary of an occupied structure and petit theft and taken to the Charlotte County Jail.
Sheriff Bill Prummell criticized the craze for online challenges that encourage people to break the law, saying such stunts can put participants in danger and result in serious consequences.
Hurley later posted a $1,500 bond.
