Burger King is giving its iconic Whopper its first major update in a decade, unveiling what it calls a more “premium” version of the classic burger after customers complained about quality and presentation.
The fast-food chain announced Thursday that the revamped Whopper will feature a “more premium, better-tasting bun,” a creamier mayonnaise, and new packaging designed to prevent the sandwich from being crushed. The traditional paper wrapper, long criticized for leaving the burger “smushed,” will be replaced with a sturdier box.
“The Whopper is an icon, so we didn’t set out to reinvent it. Instead, we elevated it based on direct guest feedback,” said Tom Curtis, president of Burger King US and Canada.
Curtis acknowledged that complaints about flattened burgers helped drive the change. “The Whopper being smushed — literally, I’ve heard it, and we’ve seen it,” he said, noting the improved packaging “holds it together.”
The core of the sandwich, including its flame-grilled beef patty, will remain unchanged. Toppings will still include freshly cut onions and tomatoes, crisp lettuce and pickles — now paired with an upgraded mayonnaise and bun aimed at enhancing taste and texture.
Franchisees are expected to invest roughly $4,000 to implement the changes, though corporate leadership has cautioned against raising menu prices amid ongoing inflation pressures.
First introduced in 1956 by Burger King co-founder James McLamore, the Whopper was designed to signal size and value. Nearly 70 years later, the company hopes these refinements will boost sales while preserving the burger’s legendary status.
