A suspect has been arrested after an incendiary device was thrown at the San Francisco home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in what authorities described as a targeted early-morning attack.
Police said the incident occurred around 4 a.m., when a Molotov cocktail was allegedly thrown at the property, igniting a fire on an exterior gate before the suspect fled the scene. Emergency responders quickly arrived and extinguished the flames. No injuries were reported.
Authorities later detained a 20-year-old man near OpenAI’s headquarters after he allegedly made threats to burn down the building. Officers recognized him as the same suspect connected to the earlier incident at Altman’s residence and placed him under arrest.
OpenAI confirmed that both the attack on Altman’s home and the threats directed at the company’s offices were linked to the same individual. The company said it is cooperating fully with law enforcement as investigations continue.
Security teams reported that the device caused limited damage to the exterior gate, and there was no immediate threat to employees or nearby residents. Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed the suspect’s identity or motive.
The incident prompted increased police presence around OpenAI’s headquarters and raised renewed concerns about safety risks facing high-profile technology leaders amid growing public debate surrounding artificial intelligence.
Officials said charges are expected as investigators continue reviewing evidence related to the attack and the threats allegedly made at the company’s offices. The case remains under active investigation by the San Francisco Police Department.
