Savannah Guthrie delivered a deeply emotional Easter message, opening up about her personal crisis of faith as her mother, Nancy Guthrie, remains missing under troubling circumstances.
Speaking during a digital Easter service hosted by Good Shepherd New York, the Today show anchor reflected on hope and renewal central to the Christian faith—but admitted she is currently grappling with grief and uncertainty.
“There are moments of deep disappointment with God, the feeling of utter abandonment,” Guthrie said, acknowledging the emotional toll of not knowing what happened to her mother.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, has been missing since February 1, with no suspects identified so far. Disturbing details from her home—including signs of a struggle and missing security footage—have intensified fears surrounding the case.
Guthrie revealed that her faith has been tested in recent weeks, describing the pain of “uncertainty and answers withheld” as uniquely difficult. Despite this, she emphasized that questioning faith is part of the human experience.
“In those darkest moments, I have wondered,” she said, adding that such feelings do not diminish belief but rather reflect the depth of personal suffering.
The veteran journalist is currently staying with family in Arizona as search efforts continue. Her colleagues and viewers have rallied around her, offering support during the ongoing ordeal.
Despite the heartbreak, Guthrie ended her message on a note of resilience and faith, reaffirming her belief while acknowledging the darkness she is enduring.
“It is the darkness that makes the light so much brighter,” she said. “I still believe.”
