Mexico has been rocked by fresh violence after the military killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as El Mencho, the powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
The operation took place in the western state of Jalisco, where troops moved in to capture the elusive cartel boss. According to Mexico’s Defense Ministry, El Mencho was wounded during the clash and later died while being transported to Mexico City.
His death marks one of the biggest blows to organized crime in recent years. US authorities had offered a reward of up to 15 million dollars for information leading to his capture.
Roads blocked and cars set on fire
Within hours of the raid, violence spread across several states. Gunmen torched vehicles, set up roadblocks, and exchanged fire with security forces in what officials described as a coordinated backlash.
Schools were shut in parts of Jalisco, and residents were urged to stay indoors. In tourist destination Puerto Vallarta, smoke was seen rising from burning vehicles, while frightened travelers rushed through Guadalajara’s airport amid fears of further unrest.
Authorities said several suspects were killed during the confrontation with troops, while others were arrested. Weapons, armored vehicles, and heavy firearms were seized. Members of the armed forces were also reported injured.
A cartel with global reach
Under El Mencho’s leadership, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel grew into one of the most aggressive and influential criminal organizations in the world. The group became a major supplier of cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl to the United States, expanding rapidly and challenging the dominance of the Sinaloa Cartel.
In recent months, Washington increased pressure on Mexico to intensify its crackdown on drug trafficking. The administration of US President Donald Trump designated the cartel as a foreign terrorist organization, signaling a tougher stance.
Security analysts warn that while the killing of El Mencho is being seen as a significant victory, it could also trigger power struggles within the cartel and spark further violence as rival factions fight for control.
For many Mexicans, the latest events are a stark reminder that the country’s long-running war against drug cartels is far from over.
