Federal prosecutors in Philadelphia have unsealed charges against 20 individuals, including 15 former NCAA Division I basketball players, alleging they were part of a sophisticated betting operation that manipulated the outcomes of college games and matches in the Chinese Basketball Association.
According to the indictment, authorities say the conspiracy ran from around late 2022 through early 2025 and involved bribe payments to players—often between about $10,000 and $30,000 per game—to deliberately underperform or otherwise influence game results for the benefit of illegal wagers placed by others.
In addition to the former collegiate players, the other defendants are described as “fixers” who allegedly recruited athletes and coordinated the scheme. This group is said to have included trainers, a former coach, and individuals identified as gamblers, influencers, or sports handicappers.
The charges were filed in federal court and include accusations such as wire fraud and bribery in sporting contests. Prosecutors and NCAA officials have emphasized the case reflects serious concerns about the integrity of competitive sports amid the rapid growth of legalized gambling.
This indictment follows earlier NCAA inquiries that resulted in lifetime bans for at least 10 players who bet on games, sometimes involving their own teams, and NCAA officials say more than 30 players have faced investigation in recent seasons over gambling-related conduct.
