At least six people were killed and more than a dozen others injured after a gunman opened fire in a Kyiv neighborhood before taking hostages inside a supermarket, Ukrainian authorities said.
The attack unfolded in the city’s Holosiivskyi district, where officials reported that the suspect first shot several people on the street before entering a nearby store and barricading himself inside. Ukrainian special police units launched an operation to rescue hostages and end the standoff after negotiations with the suspect failed.
Authorities said the attacker was later shot and killed by police during the operation. Four hostages were rescued, while one of the victims died after being taken to hospital, bringing the death toll to six.
Officials confirmed that at least 14 people were injured in the incident, including a child. Emergency services transported several victims to nearby hospitals, while others received treatment at the scene.
Investigators said the suspect had legally owned the firearm used in the attack and had previously lived in eastern Ukraine. Authorities also reported that the man set fire to his apartment shortly before carrying out the shooting.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed condolences to the victims’ families and confirmed that national police and security services are continuing to investigate the motive behind the attack. Officials said early evidence does not yet indicate a clear connection to broader security threats, though the case is being treated as a serious criminal incident.
The violence prompted a large emergency response across the district as officers secured the area and escorted civilians away from the scene. Authorities said additional details would be released as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding one of the deadliest shooting incidents in the Ukrainian capital in recent months.
