A former European detainee held in Iran for more than three years says he faced an unexpected challenge after returning home demands from tax authorities over filings missed during his imprisonment, highlighting the bureaucratic difficulties many former hostages encounter after release.
Benjamin Brière spent 1,079 days in Iranian custody before being freed in 2023. After returning to France, he said he was contacted by the national tax administration regarding several years of missing declarations that he was unable to complete while detained.
According to Brière, officials initially questioned why tax returns had not been filed during his imprisonment. He responded that completing administrative requirements while incarcerated abroad particularly in Iran was effectively impossible. The exchange later drew public attention and prompted an apology from France’s tax authority after the situation became widely reported.
Brière had been arrested in Iran in 2020 and later sentenced on charges including espionage and propaganda against the state allegations he and supporters strongly denied. His detention was widely criticized by human-rights organizations and Western governments, which described his case as part of a broader pattern sometimes referred to as “hostage diplomacy.”
Following his release, Brière said the difficulties he faced adjusting to life back home extended beyond bureaucracy to include psychological recovery and rebuilding his finances after years in detention. Advocates say such experiences are common among former detainees returning from politically motivated imprisonments abroad.
The case has renewed discussion in France about how governments support citizens after release from foreign detention, with campaigners calling for clearer administrative protections and automatic exemptions from penalties tied to missed obligations during captivity.
Officials say the situation has since been reviewed, but the episode has become a striking example of the unexpected challenges former hostages can face even after returning safely home.
