French President Emmanuel Macron has responded after U.S. President Donald Trump mocked him and his wife, Brigitte Macron, during remarks that further strained relations between Washington and European allies.
Trump made the comments during a White House lunch, joking that Macron’s wife “treats him extremely badly” and claiming the French leader was still “recovering from the right to the jaw,” referencing a widely circulated 2025 video showing Brigitte Macron appearing to push his face during a trip to Vietnam.
Speaking during a visit to South Korea, Macron dismissed the remarks as inappropriate and said they did not deserve a response, describing them as “neither elegant nor up to standard.” He emphasized that global leaders should focus on diplomacy and stability rather than personal attacks.
The exchange comes amid growing tensions between the United States and France over NATO commitments and disagreements related to the conflict involving Iran and the security of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has criticized European allies for not offering stronger military support, while Macron has urged caution and diplomatic engagement instead of escalation.
French political leaders across the spectrum also condemned Trump’s comments, calling them disrespectful and inappropriate at a time of global crisis. Analysts say the incident highlights widening divisions within the transatlantic alliance as disagreements over defense policy and Middle East strategy intensify.
Despite the personal exchange, Macron reiterated that international cooperation and stability should remain the priority, warning that public mockery between allied leaders risks undermining unity during a sensitive geopolitical period.
