Officials say the man responsible for a recent attack on a synagogue in Michigan had lost several close relatives in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon just days before the incident, a development investigators are examining as they work to understand his possible motive.
Authorities identified the attacker as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old Lebanese-born naturalized U.S. citizen who carried out the assault at Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township near Detroit. According to law enforcement officials, Ghazali rammed a vehicle into the building before the vehicle caught fire. Security personnel confronted him and ultimately neutralized the threat.
Despite the dramatic attack, no worshippers or children inside the synagogue were harmed. Around 140 people, including many young children attending a preschool program, were inside the building at the time. One security officer was injured after being struck by the vehicle, and several responding officers were treated for smoke inhalation from the fire.
Officials in Lebanon and the United States confirmed that Ghazali had recently lost four family members in an Israeli airstrike in his hometown of Mashgharah in eastern Lebanon. The victims reportedly included two of his brothers and two children from the family. Local officials said the strike occurred about a week before the synagogue attack.
Investigators are now reviewing Ghazali’s communications and online activity to determine whether the deaths of his relatives played a role in motivating the attack. The FBI has described the incident as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community and continues to lead the investigation.
Government leaders and community organizations have condemned the attack and praised synagogue security staff for their quick response, which authorities say likely prevented a far more tragic outcome.
Officials say the investigation remains ongoing as authorities examine the suspect’s background, possible motivations, and whether anyone else may have been involved.
