Ride-hailing company Uber has announced that its women-only ride option is expanding nationwide across the United States, marking a major step aimed at improving safety and comfort for female riders and drivers.
The new feature allows women riders to request trips specifically with women drivers through the Uber app. The option was initially tested in select cities and international markets, where the company reported positive feedback from users who preferred an additional layer of safety and choice when using ride-hailing services.
According to Uber, the nationwide rollout is designed to give women more control over their ride preferences. Riders selecting the feature will be matched with available women drivers nearby. Similarly, women drivers will have the option to accept ride requests from women passengers.
Safety concerns have been a long-standing issue in the ride-sharing industry. Over the past several years, ride-hailing platforms have introduced various safety features such as in-app emergency assistance, ride tracking, driver background checks, and audio recording tools. The women-only option adds another choice intended to address concerns expressed by both riders and drivers.
Uber officials say the company hopes the feature will also encourage more women to become drivers on the platform. Industry studies have shown that women make up a smaller percentage of ride-hailing drivers compared with men, often citing safety and comfort concerns as reasons for not joining the workforce.
Transportation analysts note that while the feature is optional, it represents a growing trend among technology companies to design services that prioritize user safety and inclusivity.
The nationwide launch means the option will gradually become available to millions of users across major cities and regions in the United States as Uber continues updating the app and expanding its safety-focused tools.
