Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris threw her support behind Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett in the Democratic primary race for the U.S. Senate seat in Texas, giving Crockett a high-profile endorsement during a closely watched contest.
Harris backed Crockett through a campaign robocall urging Democratic voters to support the Dallas-area lawmaker as the party searched for a strong challenger in a traditionally Republican state. The endorsement was seen as a significant boost for Crockett, who was competing against Texas state Representative James Talarico in the Democratic primary.
In the recorded message, Harris praised Crockett’s leadership and described her as a fighter capable of representing Texans in Washington. Harris said the state had the opportunity to elect someone who could stand up to powerful political interests and advocate for working families.
Crockett, who represents Texas’ 30th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, launched her Senate campaign in late 2025 after previous Democratic candidate Colin Allred exited the race. Her campaign focused on voting rights, economic fairness, and expanding healthcare access.
The Texas Senate race is considered one of the most closely watched contests ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Democrats hope to challenge long-standing Republican dominance in the state, while party leaders search for a candidate capable of winning statewide.
Despite Harris’ endorsement and support from prominent figures, the Democratic primary remained competitive throughout the campaign. Ultimately, state Representative James Talarico won the Democratic nomination after defeating Crockett in the March 2026 primary.
Following the result, Crockett conceded and called for party unity as Democrats prepare for the general election. Harris later encouraged Democrats to rally behind the party’s nominee as the race moves forward.
The Texas Senate election is expected to play a key role in determining control of the U.S. Senate in the upcoming election cycle.
