Olympic gold medalist Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested and charged with speeding after authorities said she was clocked at 104 mph on a parkway near Orlando on Thursday.
A spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said the 25-year-old sprinter was “dangerously tailgating and traveling across lanes of travel to pass other motorists” when deputies stopped her vehicle just outside the city.
Richardson, one of the fastest women in track and field history, rose to global prominence after winning gold in the women’s 4×100-meter relay at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She also earned silver in the 100 meters at the same Games, capping a comeback that followed her disqualification from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 after testing positive for chemicals found in marijuana.
Law enforcement officials did not immediately release details on Richardson’s bond status or a court date for the speeding charge.
The arrest comes after previous legal trouble for the American sprinter. Last year, Richardson publicly apologized to her boyfriend, fellow Olympic sprinter Christian Coleman, after she was arrested on a fourth-degree domestic violence charge stemming from an alleged altercation at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in July. That case drew widespread attention and prompted Richardson to issue a statement expressing regret and taking responsibility for her actions.
Richardson has been a central figure in U.S. athletics, known not only for her speed but also for her outspoken personality and resilience after setbacks early in her career. Her performances in Paris helped cement her status as a leading face of American track and field heading into the next Olympic cycle.
Authorities said the speeding case remains under review.
