TAMPA, Fla. — Michele Woods-Baxter is embracing her role as the interim head coach of the University of South Florida women’s basketball team, guiding the Bulls through a strong stretch in the American Conference.
Woods-Baxter stepped into the lead position after longtime head coach Jose Fernandez left for the WNBA just before the season began. The team responded quickly, stringing together four straight wins under her direction.
Adjusting to new responsibilities has required a shift — both for Woods-Baxter and her players — but the group has rallied around her. Graduate guard Edyn Battle praised her leadership, noting that although Woods-Baxter has never been a head coach before, she has handled the challenge impressively.
Several players highlighted the positive team culture she’s fostered, emphasizing their collective commitment and support for “Coach B.” Woods-Baxter says her players’ work ethic and enthusiasm make coaching the team rewarding, adding that they bring energy and fun to practices and games every day.
Looking ahead, the Bulls are set to host Wichita State on Saturday as they continue their season under Woods-Baxter’s guidance.
